Vicem Yachts was founded in 1990 in Tuzla, on Istanbul's Sea of Marmara coast, a region with a boatbuilding lineage that stretches back through the Ottoman-era gulet and caïque trade. The yard's founders set out to apply modern cold-molded, epoxy-saturated mahogany construction — a technique more associated with New England custom yards — to a Turkish workforce already fluent in wood. The result was a line of Downeast- and trawler-inspired motoryachts that read as classic on deck and perform like contemporary flagships below the waterline, a positioning that quickly earned Vicem a following among owners who wanted a wood yacht without the maintenance reputation wood yachts have historically carried.

The Vicem 78 Classic sits mid-line in the builder's range, which runs from 58 feet to well over 100 on fully custom commissions. It is a semi-custom platform: hull form, running gear, and finish level are fixed enough to keep delivery timelines and cost predictable, while interior layout, joinery species, and systems package are tailored to the individual owner's brief through the build process rather than bolted on afterward. Vicem was also among the earlier semi-custom builders to standardize Volvo Penta IPS pod propulsion on a flagship-size hull, trading a measure of the traditional trawler's low-rev, long-range character for meaningfully better close-quarters handling, fuel efficiency, and cabin space freed up by the absence of shaft alleys.

Obsidian Helm sources Vicem builds and available listings through its brokerage network rather than holding inventory directly; specifications above are representative of a well-configured 78 Classic and will be confirmed against the specific hull identified for a qualified buyer.
